Purpose of the Program

Department of Information and Records Management raise the work force who shall perform “information management” function which involve compiling, arrangement, access and publishing of information and / or information sources. The above mentioned work force is intended to be raised as information and records managers who shall be capable of managing information centers encompassing libraries, documentation and information centers, of using information and communication technologies competently, of teaching information access methods and techniques to any individual with any educational level and also of evaluating those areas of information science, related to arrangement and access with an understanding of business and management.

Purposes of the program are to raise qualified individuals who have a thorough knowledge about history, social, economic, philosophical and scientific developments in the field of Information and Records Management, embrace scientific thinking methodology, can use information and communication technologies effectively, are capable of thinking creatively and critically, of fulfilling their social responsibilities, contribute to development and creation of information services policies and to realize theoretical and applied researches at national and international levels which shall contribute to improvement of this discipline.

Summary of Program Qualifications:

The qualified individuals who shall serve as academic staff in the discipline of information and records management and as information-records-archive specialist, shall have knowledge on the media where the information is recorded, the change caused by technological advances to the information sources and kinds of information sources as well as processes and procedures applied in information centers regarding such information sources.

Qualifications:

  1. The student has extensive knowledge on historical, social, cultural, economic, philosophical and scientific developments in Information and Records Management.
2.The qualified individuals who shall serve as academic staff in the discipline of information and records management and as information-records-archive specialist, shall have knowledge on the media where the information is recorded, the change caused by technological advances to the information sources and kinds of information sources as well as processes and procedures applied in information centers regarding such information sources.
  1. The qualified individuals evaluate the process of creating those services necessary for recruiting individuals of information society who need information, are capable of identifying the information they need, have the capabilities to search for, find and assess the information.
  2. The qualified individuals can create the technological infrastructure necessary for selectively accessing the information and techniques pertinent to the information services.
  3. Qualified Individuals improve their capabilities of communicating with users of various disciplines who need information, of thoroughly understanding their real need for information and of enabling such users to find the information they need.
  4. The qualified individuals identify the qualifications of the staff that various kinds information centers need, characteristics of collection, location/building, qualifications of technical services and user services.
  5. The qualified individuals are capable of explaining importance of information literacy education at information centers and form of such education activities.
  6. The qualified individuals can describe international standards relevant to information sciences.
  7. The qualified individuals can describe kinds of information centers (namely library, archive, documentation and information centers) and their characteristics.
  8. The qualified individuals have acquired the literature knowledge enabling them to determine sources and obtain information for the purpose of reading or researching in their professional field and discipline, are capable of describing characteristics of professional sources (both printed and in electronic medium) which are either bibliographic sources or reference sources.
  1. Acquires knowledge about records management discipline; comprehends the dimentions of records management and learns about the standards in regard to records management; explains the process of establishment of a records management system in an organization.
  2. Uses statistical evaluation techniques and methods for information services and sources.
  3. Knows the basic concepts, principles and approaches of scientific research; has the capability of conducting a research;

  2. Examines, evaluates, interprets and implements the regulations and legislation concerning information services
  3. Acquires the skills of lifelong learning; uses these skills in access to information and gets the ability of creating new ideas.
  4. Improves skills of active learning and systematic thinking
  5. Acquires the skills of establishing and implementing an information and records management system with all its aspects in an organization.
  6. Gets the ability of using techniques, methods, programs and systems, comprising the topics of information retrieval, indexing, databases, automation systems and information Networks.
20.Has the ability of interpreting the research done in information and records management; Can define problems in researhes and can propose solutions.

  2. Increases demand for information centers and information services, by creating new communication channels with active and potantial users.
  3. Studies various types of literacies such as functional literacy, library literacy, internet literacy and information literacy and their relationships; examines professional or disciplinary responsibiities and evaluates program development.
  4. Studies concepts of self learning, learning to learn, learning culture, learning society, open society, information society and the relationships between these concepts.
  5. Has the ability of how to make research, planning, implementation and evaluation and can present these orally or in writting.
  6. Uses contemporary teaching techniques and methods.
  7. Gains application skills on issues related to different types of information centers.
  8. Acquires information and skills in detail on how to define descriptive knowledge of all kinds of information sources in electornic or printed media, how to select data entries and feed into appropriate fields.
  9. Determines, executes and implements the written communication and correspondence management practices in accordance with the methods and techniques that are stipulated by rules and regulations.
  10. Gains competence in executing records management system applications in accordance to methods and techniques that are stipulated by records management discipline
  11. Shares orally or in writing, his/her studies and criticisms about information and records management issues
  12. Behaves in accordance to his/her professional tasks, responsibilities and scientific or ethic principles.
  13. Using lifelong learning skills, improves his/her knowledge and competencies continously.
  14. Makes teamwork both in disciplinary and interdisciplinary activities.
  15. Uses information and records management knowlege and skills in making comperative studies.
  16. Competent in oral and written Professional English.
  17. Determines management information needs for all levels of management and can design systems that will provide such information.
  18. In all subjects he/she has the competence in organization of information and information retrieval.
  19. Has the competence of establishing and executing information and records management systems in all kinds of organizations.
  20. Is able to evaluate the researches in the field of information and records management; is able to define the problems in researches and develops solutions.
  21. Is able to use computer programs that are required by the field of information and records management.

 

Education Type:

It is a full time program.

Admission Conditions:

This is a description of the conditions of registration for the program. For example, admission of students into this program is fulfilled within the framework of regulations enacted by Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and through a central examination system called ÖSYS (Student Selection and Placement Exam). The students, after specifying school of their choice, are placed by the Student Selection and Placement Center to various programs depending on the grades they obtained from this exam.

Description of Previous Teachings:

This is the description of the exemption process where student can be exempted from specific classes in case such class is taken at other universities or departments and an approval is given that the content of previously taken classes are compatible with the content of the classes instructed at Ankara University.

Exams, Evaluation and Grading:

The exams are administered as classical answer exams. There is at least one mid-term and a final exam. Grades are calculated by using 40% of mid-term and 60% of final exam.

Conditions for Graduation:

It is a condition for graduation from undergraduate programs that students must have a minimum ECTS of 240 credits in total, serve 2 internship and complete their graduation thesis.

Degree Earned:

When a student is graduated from this department, such student is entitled to have a graduate degree in Information and Records Management.

Degree Earned and Its Level:

This program provides graduate level studies. Those students, who successfully completed this program, shall be entitled to earn Bachelor of Arts in Information and Record Management.

Requirements for Degree Earned and Rules:

In order to be graduated from this program, a student must obtain a minimum GPA 2.00 out of 4.00. Accordingly, students shall be graduated from this program with a minimum ECTS of 240. They need to complete their internships and graduation thesis within the time spans specified.

Passing to Upper Levels (in Turkish):

The students, who are graduated from this program, may apply for studying in post-graduate programs.
